Rob Zombie: Hellbilly deluxe II
16/02/10 || Euthanatos
Officially, this album is called “Hellbilly Deluxe II: Noble Jackals, Penny Dreadfuls and the Systematic Dehumanization of Cool”. That’s a fucking pretentious name if I ever saw one. But who cares about pretentiousness if the music is great, right? Right. Except the music here is fucking terrible. This is one of the shittiest albums I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. That’s saying something.
Why are you reviewing Rob Zombie, Euthanatos? You obviously don’t like him, you true metal faggot. Who, me? I love Zombie. Seriously, I like him so much, I even enjoy his movies. I like White Zombie moderately and I think Rob’s solos albums, particularly the first “Hellbilly Deluxe”, are great. Seriously. Rob knows his shit. Or knew, unfortunately. It seems Hollywood got to Rob’s head (even though he has been, so far, wildly unsuccessful). He can’t write a song worth his shit anymore.
Yeah, yeah, the movie snippets are all here, and no one does them quite like Rob. He’s the Quentin Tarantino of movie snippets in albums. That alone is not enough to make an album interesting, though. Zombie used to make some fun songs, with great hooks. His robotic, raspy voice was quite unique. Now his songs sound like a pastiche of leftovers from past albums and his voice is annoying. I truly have no idea how this happened.
The only redeeming song on this is the already old “Werewolf Women of the SS”, from Rob’s venture in Tarantino’s “Grindhouse”. That’s really pathetic, when you think about it. Even the lyrics are bad. Rob used to have some catchy phrases, clever and shit, now it’s all kindergarten bullshit. And, fuck, the people on this album are some of the best in the business. John 5 is the fucking guitar player. That guy has fucking chops. Why does it not show here? Oh, I know why, Zombie probably didn’t want anything on the album that wasn’t written by him. Well, there you go.
Seriously, even the single, “What?” is so atrocious, it’s offensive. What a load of garbage this is. Steer clear away from this, even if you’re a fan. It’s trash of the lowest degree. I wouldn’t buy this album even to throw it at someone. This leads me to question; when, in the history of man, has it been a good idea to release the sequel to music? No, really, when? Was “Land of the Free II” a good idea? How about “Operation: Mindcrime II”? Or songs, even, like “The Unforgiven II” and “The Unforgiven III”. Were those good ideas? No? Then why the FUCK do people still do it? WHY?
The cover: Zombie’s ugly mug, because, you know, we’re not quite there yet on the pretentiousness level.
